Drug Uses: Cefdinir (marketed by Abbott Laboratories under the brand name Omnicef) is a semi-synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic in the third generation of the cephalosporin class, proven effective for common bacterial infections of the ear, sinus, throat, and skin. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December of 1997
How to Use Omnicef
: Take Omnicef exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
• Take each tablet or capsule with a full glass of water.
• Omnicef can be taken with or without food.
• Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium, iron supplements, or multivitamins with iron, with a dose of Omnicef. Take these products at least 2 hours before or after a dose of Omnicef to prevent decreased effectiveness of the antibiotic. The Omnicef suspension can be safely administered with iron-fortified infant formula.
• To ensure that you get a correct dose, measure the liquid form of Omnicef with a dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one. Shake the suspension well before measuring a dose.
• Take Omnicef at evenly spaced intervals to keep a constant level of drug in the body.
• Take all of the Omnicef that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.
• Store the capsules at room temperature away from moisture and heat. The suspension can be stored at room temperature (or refrigerated) for 10 days. Throw away any unused medicine after 10 days.

Precautions: Before taking cefdinir, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics (e.g., cephalexin); or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, intestinal disease (colitis). This medicine contains sugar which may increase blood sugar levels if you have diabetes. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Kidney function declines as you grow older. This medication is removed by the kidneys. Therefore, elderly people may be more sensitive to this drug. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This drug does not pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions:Aluminum or magnesium containing antacids reduce the absorption of cefdinir from the intestine. Separating the administration of cefdinir and such antacids by 2 hours prevents this interaction.
Iron supplements also reduce the absorption of cefdinir. Separating the administration of cefdinir and such antacids by 2 hours prevents this interaction.

Possible Side Effects: According to the Omnicef website, side effects include diarrhea, vaginal infections or inflammation, nausea, headache, and abdominal pain.

Overdose: Seek emergency medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of Omnicef
overdose include: dizziness or drowsiness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, facial flushing, fast heartbeat, and loss of consciousness.

at room temperature away from moisture and sunlight. Avoid excessive heat. Avoid freezing. Keep out of the reach of children. Dispense of this medicine in a tight, light-resistant container. Do not store Omnicef
in the bathroom.

Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
